1996...

This may be the funniest website from the 90s ever. Keep an eye out for the wizard on the bicycle...

Line Creek Ride...

You cant see the trail because there isnt one...

With mountain biking being so awesome in the area, we decided to take an epic ride up on the beartooth plateau. I cant explain the ass jarring, hand numbing, suspension breaking wonder this really was. The views were awesome, there was no trail on the top and so everyone just wanders the 10 miles across the top of the major pain in the ass to the sweet downhill. I remember feeling that the rear shock was getting pretty hot and I couldnt feel my hands.
this cant be good for my prostate.

Its so hot out that I dont think glass of milk was good idea. Mix in some dehydration and half banana, which will soon find itself one of my worst decisions on big bike rides in the near future. Luckily the lightning didnt kill us and rain was curt. The horses didnt buck us and the singletrack stayed connected to the super exposed downhill. Then the trail weaved into the trees and became dreamy and fast. Garrett cuts corners, Jason hits Garrett, and Amy just falls off the trail. I maintain a subtle brake squeeze and wear the pads down. I smile.

Repost....

So if you didnt experience this the first time I think you should experience it now, or again. PBR in hand I was gazing at my desktop image and noticed this position is identical to how I sleep. And I really snore on my back too. Though the veggie box is not my trademark. I use a hat and a raft trailer.

Note: I calculated that if I rafted all year I would have a sweet income of 26ooo+ not including tips of at least 20 per raft. I guess thats not so much but for the amazing amount of fun I have thats pretty sweet. it almost like getting paid to tell dumb jokes and squirt people with a hose. Ha!

As for the Lebanese Catastrosphe....Fuck

Wet and Wetter....

Back on the wet side, things are good. The kegerator flows strong and the river is dropping fast. Not too sure if the season will even make far into August. So the team has devised a plan to deliver ourselves to the thirst of the Salmon River mid August for a good three day float full of fun in a river that has water.

Also on the list is pillaging the Gardner stretch of the Yellowstone and showing those yahoos how fun is actually had. Surfing and flipping, wheelies and flipping, and some more surfing and flipping. As much carnage as allowable in 45 minutes.

You may not see me but I see you! Surfing the drop and rehydrating at the same time.

Other news: The jobby jobs for the fall are starting to settle into my mind and Iwas thinking of starting my own business. And Im hiring. So if you will work for 5 bucks an hour and like barley shakes, find me. Thats half the test.

The Bobber is going to guide the Futalafu down in Chile, Iwant to go but I dont want to die just yet, so maybe not. And Im still waiting on the position down in Ghana, though things have changed, like the minister of Environment, so a 3 year position there might not be what it was a couple months ago. Im thinking about convincing the FWP people to put me in a management GIS position down here in region 5. GS-9 is a decent paycheck and I get to float the river on the clock. Maybe the USGS want a happy employee for a change? Maybe Canadia? You know, those people and thier geese, ay!

I was in the store looking at gear and a thought occurred. I could open my own store, hence all the gear I have and seldom use any more. Goretex everywhere. I couldnt even think of buying anything because I already have it.... in New Mexico. And I should have a motorcycle for sale soon too. Your choice: 1980 Kawasaki 550 classic sprinter that blows flames from the pipe or a 1988 Suzuki GSX 600 Katana in the amazing color scheme of black and purple. People in the 80's where idiots, but fast idiots. So as the gas prices increase you have two options: 45 mpg or 80 mpg respectively. The lesser of the mpgs has the cool flame thrower bonus, definately worth it!

MIA...

The only thing that youve missed out on is the awesome whitewater.

Do know that, like the christmas diaper photo special of years past, there will be another addition but in a different flava: The Raft Guide Calender!

Wait for it.

Incredible Edible People...

I just wanted to give a shout out to all the people and dogs and cats that I have been able to intereact with for the past 28 years, 1 month, and a handful of daze. I think its pretty important that YOU know how awesome you are. I know this blog is loaded with cheese and inuendos and a lot conversation that you dont know what to do with, but thats ok, because today is the day where YOU are being recognized as important.

That is unless youre the copper that put the ticket on my windshield for parking backwards in Red Lodge.... that was unnesassary and dumb, but I reckon youre ok.

So I sit here and think of all the good times and all the bad that werent that bad but made the good times better and stuff by the tree and the rock, you know which... And as most of you know, I come and go lsot in the act of breathing or living and can barely manage to plan a day ahead. Thats why I want to thank YOU. Because you planned for me. You decided what beer was the flavor of the evening. You paid for me, because I forgot my wallet in Germany. You are the UA employee who hand delivered my wallet to me on the flight about to take of because I left it on the last flight. You pulled me off the railroad tracks when I passed out. You told me stories when I had chicken pox and laughed at me when I had that full body rash only cured by by a bathtub of oatmeal, I still have a pox scar on my eyeball. You mentored me when I needed it and picked me up when I had fallen prey to myself. You fed me the grossest ramen noodles I have ever eaten in my entire life.

Paragraph two. You are the one with the WWII surplus of toothbrushes. I kicked YOUR ass once on Shogo online, and that was awesome. Speaking of, You introduced the idea of not watching TV, and books are so much more colorful, and the sensual scenes are whacked crazy. You made me laugh uncontrollably in gradeschool. You taught me religion and reintroduced me to myself in highschool. You said I didnt have to go to Oregon State anymore. You showed me the learning experience of depends as an adult on Halloween, and Ive run with it ever since. You told me the dirtiest joke I can remember, and I tell it every time I go rafting, along with the pirate joke, which I will love and cherish.

Basically everyone rocks. If you are the one who puts me in jail, you will cease rocking. But I dont think my life could have been as awesome as I think it is without the people that I think they are. Thanks for being.

YOU ARE AWESOME!!

Burn....

A couple of funny situations and here I am.

I live in a van down by the river. I know that you know that it wouldnt be any different. The only difference is that I have all the beer and none of the firewood. And every morning that I sleep outside I wake to rain in the face. WTF?

Just a quick rant on the tipping policy with river rats. Lets say your entire family goes rafting and the entire trip is nothing but laughter and good times and awesome soaked to the bone whitewater, nothing short of great. Now its important to note that when you dine out you dont leave a quarter behind on a $150 tab where the server was there for your every need, right? So dont tip a guide $3 after spending the last 4 hours or awesomeness with em, or that guide might just give it back and punch you in the face, because its deserved.

Aside of that Ive hada great time laughing and experiencing some odd cool thingies by the tree, the one by the rock....you know?

1. Sunburn leaves funny lasting impressions but the chaco tan is back. And I got a spectacular jacket burn and rare form of coon eyes from the sunglasses.

2. Driving down the road with muggles, Matt, noticed that the rafts were leaning to the side and he thought of trashing the guides who didnt tie em down enough....well, after a turn and the trailer kinda swung out he noticed that it wasnt the strapping but a missing trailer wheel. About a mile later a passer-by showed up and delivered the said wheel. It snapped off right on the axle inside of the leaf springs and dragged from there. Ouch.

3. The 10 year tradition was broken when one of the new guides was going through a rapid called the "beartooth drop" and was backsurfed and dumped. This all happened in a duckie. I was right there waiting when he came up all wide eyed and out of breath from the cold. I always wear that big smile when people surface cold and wet, and towed him out of the surf. At the same time we watched the duckie float and wrap on the bridge pilon. Damn.

4. An amazing horseback ride on the Stoney Lonesome Ranch. Wow. I think he said he had more than 8000 acres and most of it was at the foot to the Absarokas.

5. Embrace the swim!

6. During the high water extravaganza, we measured the distance from the top of a raft to the the bottom of the lowest bridge, we only found three inches. That was interesting, how do you get 6 people that low, one might ask? I never reveal my secrets....mwahaha!!

I dont have a picture...

Yes, I know, but I dont. The rafting season has begun and all is so good. The river reached a big high yesterday and extremely fun.

We did some pre run calculations and figured out our problems. One: the Stillwater was running at some enormous 5000+ CFS and we noticed that we might not be able to fit the rafts under the bridges. A little reminder of the shitty bridge at Okoboji, which I think I spelled wrong. We found the rafts had 3 inches free from the lowest bridge. Then theres a nine inch nail.... Two: you really gotta think fast, this waters a moving! But all was good and I have the most amazing blisters and callouses from 3 days of rafting and oaring from 930 to 4.

And the koolaid guy busts through the wall..."Oh YEAH"!

But I do have photos from the 12 hours race. Czech it!

Theres Damon and I exercising our right to abuse substances over the 12 hour race. As well I have to point out the awesome collection of costumes and creativity for the ride. That would be foil....

Flux Capacitor...

Nebraska is windy and all kinds of weather exist, a big change from the egyptian dust bomb. I have a number 5 still markered on my arm, but Ill have to tell you about that later.

What I did do is go on a little beer bike run with the Joel Tabormeister. Hes one of those friends I only see once a year for about a day, so we rode on that day. And hes strong, sexy and married with two awesome little girls, one of which is really keen on the lucrative lemon business... whatever that may be?

An Ode To Joel

And hes sexy too, did I mention sexy?

And then he goes and steps it up... jumping the bench launcher in the front lawn, followed immediately by sick air and something else and lemonaide.

Live it
Love it
Lick it

'Braskee...

Back on the home front and the cycle be kicking. Some rain some gas and some golf and some turtles on the green. Like really big turtles. As well, I have been heavily involved many a political discussions while sippin back on the ol' Busch Lights... wow, cant say that I really missed that beer, but its so good when cold, considering it is almost all water and the rest is can.

Heading North soon. Rivers be a flowing...

Blog Attack...

I cant stop. Im sorry, kinda, or not really...

But Im ready to burn:

1. The money you give me when you buy my Suzuki GSX600

2. The living crap outta my brake shoes on the killer downhills...weeeeeee!!

The home of stuff...

Despite being a major depository for random stuff ranging between childhood photos and car parts and tacky furniture, this house is something special. Every time I crack a beer and wander to the porch for a great sunset I witness an anomaly. Lots of jackrabbits and birdies and prairie dogs and no visible neighbors that appeat to be alive. I saw one today, but maybe it wasnt the neighbor and just a repairman? Lots of space. Tons. And I got sunburn in one hour trimming vines...I mean theyre huge... and the conifer...whoa!!

The Back and its natural naturalness...

The Side Shot with a nice flowering tree...

Flowers, wee!!!

Dont forget...if you want the full size images of the panoramics, left click and it shall appear! Right click and save from there....

I cant friggin' wait....

I have one photo that explains...

And one for how Im getting there...

And I just noticed... yup, theres lights on top, and thats awesome...

As far as wearing pants...well I dont know, there is a compromise though...and Im not wearing a banana hammock, and thats final.

If you see this down by the river...BE SCARED

Try and be in MT the first week of June to participate in drinking and riding RL mainstreet
Get in shape on the way or I will pay the price on the river, which is gonna be the case anywho
Raft and kayak my blues away...
Remeet my spiritual self in the vast uberlands of the Montana flowage

Internet that works is really neat!

The Flight...

After leaving friends and family in Cairo...Im sad and a little lost. Those were some fun times. And after arriving in the States its kind of a welcome to Wally World. NM is great though, the air is amazing and like usual, after my first shower in the ultra hard water all my skin fell off, or is still in the process of peeling, like that big flap called my nose.

The travelling seemed endless. 3am go to Cairo Airport. 5am leave. 5-6 hour layover in Frankfurter eating icecream and sleeping on unsleepable benches. Finally the tranoceanic flight happens and oh yeah they have an awesome repeating downtempo radio station and wireless internet, which I never used cuz I slept the whole 10 hours. I hada crazy jeaned Romanian next to me, and nobody spoke his language so the explaining the menus was hillarious. The Stewardess explained beef and potatoes by making horns with her fingers on her head and mooing. I went over well. I spewed my beer out my nose.

Then customs happened. My hour.5 layover turned into a close the doors at the gate as I ran up and "sorry, they just closed". And my response, "well can they just open"? "Im sorry theyre CLOSED" And Im like, " fuck this!" And the dude is like "GO AWAY" So I give a little physical body language that if read properly reads " I dont like you or your company, you suck" but if read improperly reads " I have serious indigestion from all that icecream, wheres the loo, and the customer service desk, I wanna give em a piece"

And then I talked the shuttle driver to drop me off at my house. She was the coolest ex-tractor trailer comando now shuttle driving and bad story teller to welcome me back to the dry state, weather-wise and employment-wise.

Oddness reigns

Sandstorm...

An introduction:
This time of year is called the khamaseen, or the 50 days, and is essentially the period of time where you will see storms, sandstorms to be more specific. Same as the idea of a monsoon but sans precip.
Im sure a lot of people have heard my bar joke about landing in Cairo during a sandstorm and the noises the engines made and the view form the window...well that was this. But it happened in such a dramtic speed that imagining being out inthe desert when this happens is like kissing yourself goodbye. Everything turns to nothing. Fast. Guy was at the house and we headed out on the balcony for a drink and got sandblasted. Though the stuff is more like a fine flour it gets in your teeth and hair and ears and piles up below cracks in doors and windows.
To say the drink was short lived is one thing. The next day I collected a glass from the porch that was a quarter full of sand.
Without rain this land will be eternally dirty and dusty and stinky. Though Im getting an amazing nostalgia from the heat bringing out the summer smells again. I wouldnt call em all good but the feeling is. Nowhere else can you get overwhelmed by the smell of shisha walking down the road and find yourself surrounded by foul water in an urban desert environment.

The following are photos from the storm from a clear day. I tried to replicate the position as best I could and came pretty close for most of them:

1 and 2 are the Queen Boat and the 26 July bridge in background

2

3 and 4 are the tall Govt building across the Nile

4

5 and 6 are the same from the inside of the house

6
What isnt seen here is the crazy orange glow that the sand cast as the sun filtered through. Imagine the day going from clear to orange like the photos in about 10 minutes....

Salty Chips...

Last night I bought some salt and vinegar Pringles. Holy Pizzaaamm! These things are outta control. My mouth is on fire. I love it.

Anyway today is the 8th day of the 5th month of the year 2006. Exactly 28 years ago I was born. And oh how the world has suffered since...

And Im working. Eating the bomb chips. And paint chips. And in Cairo its after 2pm. That means its beer:30. Or nap:30?

Recent events log: wakeboarder in the nile, sandstorm, chips, a car wreck, a mini KTM dirtbike terrorizing the neighborhood, masturbating taxi drivers (more!?#), and the wireless antenna I set up died, and thats sad.

International Relations...

This is good and funny...

Note: I am in the middle of a serious sandstorm right now. I cant see more than a hundred feet. Probably less. The most amazing of oranges and browns and grit inthe teeth. Dont smile. The smell of a really old and dry locker room. Old. Dusty. Im sure that in the morning there will be this pile of collected dust under the window gaps. Dusty. Old.

AutoCrap...

Heres the dilly yo... Im working between autoCad 2006 and arcgis9 to make a wonderful little ditty of a plants map for the new AUC campus.

The problem: Importing the cad data is pretty bad. and I dont want to hand draw 8200 plants, theres simply not enough beer for this task. The blue code (species) isnt attached to the actual tree's attributes, thus making it completely useless.

What I need from you: Dear Jason P., I would love to trade the beers Im not going to drink for some knowledge of linking a line that points to plants telling their species. the plants are unique points. the line merely intersects these points visually telling the spp. code. I need to get this into the points' attribute data....argh

It doesnt have to be Jason, but I know he knows and his email has changed, expired, hes moved, undercover, or had an extreme makeover. If someone knows please help. If you need an image, I can do that. and the beer.

Help....
